Today's Macros
Lens: Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro & +10 achromat & Ring Flash Camera: Pentax K-r Photo Location: Ontario, Canada ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F19

These are some of what I found today on a short walk. Short because of the heat, it's in the 90s plus high humidity. I hadn't taken any in a few days, so I figured it was time to get back out there. I should have got a K-5 so it'd be weather sealed against the sweat from my brow.

@luftfluss - finally got one! Excuse the vignetting, I reversed a 50mm on my 70-300mm for this one. Effective magnification is approximately 2:1.

Dunno what it is, but it sure is weird. I think it's a nymph stage.

Feverfew flower. The leaves of this are used for migraine.

Meadow Rue flowers.

A potato flower. You can see the similarity to nightshade flowers, and other Solanum species.

A long grass in flower. Not sure of species.

A beetle I rescued from one of the rain barrels, still soaking wet.

Crab spider waiting with open arms. It's on one of the first milkweed flowers to open.

Common Mallow flower, showing the pollen nodes. It looks better at full size.

Sage flower, or Salvia officinalis. This is the common, edible herb.

That's all for now.

Really interesting pics - easy for me to forget about the wide and amazing world of bugs but these macros are a great reminder!

It's a very good series. Metallica Fly is wicked cool, it's nice to see the detail I wasn't able to capture in mine. The 2nd bug is really weird, but I agree that it looks like something in a nymph stage. I also really like the Meadow Rue and potato flowers, and your composition of the crab spider is great.

We'll be getting your hot-n-humid weather tomorrow here in NJ. I'll be sweating like a pig, meh.

@dmort - thanks! I find shooting bugs to be therapeutic, and they're likely my favourite subjects.

@eaglem - Ah, so that's what they are. Thanks!

@luftfluss - I still like the pose and comp of your fly better. Being so tiny, they're a challenge eh? Thanks for the comments. Hope the weather isn't too bad.

Excellent series. Well done. I really like the crab spider. The second one is a leaf hopper nymph.

Hmmm... see, I prefer the angle on yours, because the two most notable features of this fly are the long legs and the long, irridescent body. I got a couple shots of one today, it's tough because they are tiny and seem to stay in the shadows.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback, guys.

I'll definitely be watching for more stilt flies. They're a good challenge.
