Colorado Springs Area On Fire
Camera: K5 Photo Location: Falcon, Colorado
Posted By: Bob Harris, 06-26-2012, 08:32 PM

It looked like fire personnel had the fire under control, 4 C-130 planes were dropping slurry on the fire, hundreds of firefighters on the line and then about 3pm, the winds changed blowing up to 60mph and all fire lines were breached. Last report was that at least 30,000 were evacuated and many homes were on fire. Photos here are from our campground, the smoke got so bad the area actually turned a yellow color. The winds have changed again, our campground is clear, but the fire is still roaring out of control and burning through neighborhoods above the city.

thanks Kyle, not sure if you or others have been in this area before, but one of the cool family places to visit and eat, the Flying W Ranch, burned to the ground, many homes were also lost. Here is a link.

Flying W Ranch, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Things to do in Colorado Springs. Family Friendly Attraction. Old Western Experience.

they haven't officially called it an arson fire, but on the local TV channels, the fire departments are asking for help in what may have started the fire or if anyone has seen something suspicious

This is so sad and still a very scary situation. I've been to the Flying W a few times and have friends in Colorado Springs. My first real date with my husband was a hike in Waldo Canyon. My old hometown of Manitou Springs was evacuated but they have since let everyone back in. Unbelievable pictures coming out of the area. Like a friend of mine said, "if you pray, now is the time to pray for Colorado Springs." Stay safe.

thank you, we are far enough away from the fire, but that smoke storm really surprised us.

We are leaving CS on Monday headed to Estes Park, where there is another fire, but had reservations at the Flying W to take family there this Saturday for our farewell outing. It is calm so far this morning, so hopefully that will help get this fire out, BTW Manitou Springs is a great place to visit and very historic.

Some excellent photos Bob, especially the first one.

It is a very sad time for the front range. That Waldo Canyon fire really moved fast yesturday. The firefighters were amazed when it burned through two valleys right before their eyes in a matter of minutes.

It is now into the neighborhoods and has burned the Garden of the Gods (I believe). MANY homes are destroyed and 39.000 people are under evacuation orders.

Stay safe out there Bob!

What a terrible shame. I just saw a news program saying fire is near the Air Force Academy.

It is so amazing that something so horrendous can make for some pretty awesome photos. What a great record of events you have captured Bob. Be safe and keep us up on how things are going out there. They have evacuated the Air Force Academy as of this AM I think.
