My third ever night shot with K10D
Posted By: gawan, 01-24-2008, 04:30 PM

First time I took my DSRL out in the night, what do you think? Any advice for night photography?

This was my first ever. It's the STANDARD road overview with light-trails type of image.
Started out like this, 30Sec EXP, F13, ISO-100, Shutter Prio, camera set on top of a railing.

After some photoshopping it ended up like this;

Some tips, if you can, shoot raw. You'll have alot more info to work with in PP.
Second, try to always use a tripod (looks like you already do this).
Try some overview images of the entire cityscape if you have the possibility.
Keep ISO low, or you'll probably experience large amounts of noise.
That's my 0.02$

Thanks libbe - I always shoot raw and yes did use tripod. Did not thought about ISO at all. These seem to be the curent max ISO 400. Frankly said I just steadied my tripod composed and chose aperture (8), and fired with 2s delay.

Yes overview would have been nice now that you mentioned it!

I think that I still have to learn more pp still

Also the yellowish city light is somewhat dull. Some days ago when walking my dog late I saw a perfect set up - moon, glittering see, an island with a lonely house with bright windows glowing in the dark - but did not got my camera! Lesson: always carry your camera when possible, even in the night time, you never know when the perfect picture is there to be taken

If you don't like the "yellow dull colours" of the cityscape, it is allways possible to correct this in PP by adjusting either colour-balance or hue/saturation in photoshop. Also you should probably read up on layer masks, so you can colour-balance/hue/sat certain parts of the images.

That is SO true, i have missed out on soo many perfect situations ;(

Thanks for the tip.

And I like your work with pp on your photo. Chances the mood nicely - no more restless commercial lights, only the main thing, the road, comes in front.
