ID on large raptor?
Lens: promaster 70-300 Camera: K100D Photo Location: Tacoma

To the naked eye, this fella looked like maybe a juvenile bald eagle, but not in the computer... Can anyone ID the species? If he's a hawk, he's a very well-fed specimen (i.e. he could give a bald eagle a run for the money, size-wise). My best guess from looking around the Interwebz is an osprey...

This was just off the end of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, so easy marine and beach access for food as well as the usual land based critters.

Yes, it is an Osprey...

who has a range of up to 9,670,000 square kilometres --- and a global population of 460,000 individuals

The Osprey's name is derived from the Greek 'hals' meaning Salt and 'autos', meaning Eagle ... they feed exclusively on fish (I am a newby to apps and love my bird app for just this reason!!!)

In southern Ontario the conservation authority builds platforms on the top of telephone poles for the Osprey to nest on... it is very cool seeing the babies sticking their heads up screaming for mom...

Cool photo... thanks for sharing!!

Thanks all! I was actually rather surprised at how well this one turned out, considering it was a handheld "grab shot" at 300mm... Says good things about the SR processing

You must be referring to haliaetus, the specific epithet in the scientific name Pandion haliaetus.
The name 'Osprey' comes from Old French 'osfraie', from Latin 'ossifraga' (meaning bone-breaker), according to academic linguist W.B. Lockwood (1984. The Oxford Book of British Bird Names. Oxford University Press, Oxford. 174 p.).
