Starting the old engine

Yesterday we had a festival of old farming machines in our little village.
Here is a sequenze showing how much effort it takes to start the vintage 1-cylinder engines of an old "Lanz Bulldog".
The sound of these old engines is just great ... especially when 30 or 40 of these run at the same time ... it feels like aan earthquake is shaking the ground.

First you have to prepare to preheat the engine



... put the fire in place



... and wait for a while

I grew up in the '50s in wheat farming area in Australia where these were still fairly common.
The steering wheel was removable and used to crank the engine after your sequence of shots
The sound of them starting and running at power is unforgettable.
The engine ran equally in clockwise or anticlockwise and a skilled driver could reverse the engine while it was running

Thanks for your comment. Yes, cranking the engine with the steering wheel looks awsome!

... and this was probably the luxury version
