USS Iowa battleship
Lens: 12-24 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: San Pedro harbor
Posted By: SpecialK, 07-08-2012, 03:48 PM

USS Iowa has a new home in San Pedro. Opening day...

1. 20-minute delay...once going, they just collected our bar-coded ticket without scanning it.

2. Making progress.

3. 16-inch business end.

4. No dropping "bombs" here?

5. State-of-the-art. In 1943.

6. Radar?

7. I forget what weapons (?) these are. MK 36 Chaff Launcher (Thanks I/O!)

8. Harpoon missile launchers.

9. Missile.

10. Rear turret.

11. 16-inch shell.

12. Rear-view of Vincent Thomas bridge joining San Pedro and Long Beach.

13. BB-61.

14.

15. Specs.

It gets nearly 27 FEET per gallon (200 gal/mile), though you are pushing 55,000 tons.

Reminds me of visiting the USS New Jersey, an Iowa-class ship. Nice series, I especially like #12 & 14.

A wonderful set of images!!!

#7 is a MK 36 Chaff Launcher which is used to mask the ship from incoming missiles. It is controlled by the SLQ-32(v) that has its antenna assembly in #8 near the extreme left hand edge of the frame about 2/3 of the way up.

Thanks Kyle. Number four is very reminiscent of the Navy stencil folks juxtapositioning anything with multiple meanings they could get past the CPO's during my time in 68-72.

That was in the captain's wardroom :-) It also had Roosevelt's bathtub.

I don't know - I have not seen the movie :-(

The LA maritime museum is right next door, and the USS Lane Victory is 1/4 mile up the road. The Queen Mary and Fort MacArthur/Pt Fermin lighthouse are close, though in opposite directions.

Thanks for commenting!

Here are some leftovers.

47 crewmen died in a turret explosion in 1989.

The door was open :-)

The low angle hides the porta-potties behind the jeep.

Interesting series. When I was a kid, playing Top Trumps, the Iowa was one of the best cards in the "WW II Battleships" deck. Its stats beat pretty much every Axis battleship apart from The Yamato which outgunned it and weighed a whole lot more.

Then again, you can't exactly visit The Yamato, can you?

Actually you can visit it.

Yamato Today

But only with suitable submersibles.

Good pics...

A friend of mine has the largest collection of photographs of the USS Iowa. The person was specifically commissioned to photograph the ship after the incident when one of the guns/turrets had the incident.

Btw the Navy will soon be starting work on a *swath* version of both battleships and also at least one carrier
