I vote for Southern Hairstreak (Fixsenia favonius). Species is widespread from New England south to Florida and west to Arizona and north into southern Canada. Don't see the l'il devils up here much though :-)

Thanks! I wish I had done a bit better with the Tiger Swallowtail, though.

Thanks! I researched the name, and I think it's actually the Northern, because the orange mark on the lower wing is smaller than on the Southern. I appreciate the info you gave me.

Darned hard to do taxonomy through pictures. But a lovely specimen, well-captured! Especially since Hairstreaks are such nervous little guys :-)

Thanks, over the last couple of years I've managed to capture decent images of at least a dozen species either in my yard or in a field a short walk away. I don't recall ever seeing a Hairstreak before, this one was flitting around a Hibiscus syriacus.

luftfluss these are extraordinary in every way. You have a wonderful eye for butterflies. Great compositions, dof, and the lighting and bokeh on all is lovely. Beautiful shots

Thanks, Rupert! The blue butterflies are so tiny - about 1/2" total wingspan - that they are easy to miss, and also sometimes th eblue is so light it looks like a little white butterfly.

Thanks, Tess! The are a joy (although sometimes frustrating) to photograph. I love the natural illumination, as often the flash produces harsh colors & contrasts that seem off to me.
