Looks like a young one - nicely framed and tack sharp.

thanks all, he and its mate had a nest this year and he was hoping for a second one
the last couple of days he came with a lot of fish as a gift for his partner, but he ate a lot as well. The pellet stayed on the branch for a couple of minutes before falling off int the water

Wonderful photo.
So, I'm just wondering how people go about photographing kingfishers...I mean, does one find out the whereabouts of the nest and sit and wait, or is it purely by coincidence?
When I've taken photos of kingfishers, it's been by coincidence; I've been walking by a pond and spotted one of a branch.
This has only happened twice
I'm anxious for tips.

find out were they are and look for branches were they might be sitting looking out. Then sit and wait for an hour of 2 and move to a next place. I've been lucky. A friend knew a location and a nesting wall was close by.
We hung up some camo netting and they are a lot less skittish but they know were there.
