High ISO Foxes in the backyard
Lens: Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 HSM II Macro Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Surahammar, Sweden ISO: 12800 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F2.8
Posted By: VisualDarkness, 07-21-2012, 07:28 PM

A couple of fox cubs were playing in the backyard a couple of evenings ago. Low light, fast moving subjects and a window pushed up the ISO so I went creative with the PP. Without the high ISO I wouldn't have been able to get the shots at all, so yes, it's actually useful.

Waterpaint colors with what I tried to transform the noise to look more like film film grain.

Exposure 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 200 mm
ISO Speed 10000

Here I went all soft on the look and find it somewhat beautiful.

Exposure 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 200 mm
ISO Speed 20000

Tremendous shooting! Excellent work on the processing, too.

I think you did a great job.

Thanks! I think think it went well too. Working with the limitations I had really pushed both my technique and creativity so challenges like this are great!

They worked out really great, fantastic job! I recently came across the Noise Ninja plugin after trying several noise removal tools and it is amazing, making some of my unusable shots quite decent.

Love both of these but the second one is the winner for me. It is so beautiful and just perfect.

Thanks! They are truly stunning creatures, so swift and nimble and with a lot of energy.

I got Lightroom 3.6 and also Topaz, but I rarely use Topaz at all as it takes so long time to load and work with for some reason (Lightroom is pretty slow too).

I'm actually considering to make bigger prints of these two shots, my first real prints.

Love those! The first is my favorite, but the 2nd is also a great shot. The high ISO doesn't bother me in the first one at all, it is still a very fine shot!
Regards!

I love #1 - that is a super shot. Well done !

I hope you don't mind (if you do just tell me and I'll happily delete these) but I think you can really have fun with different plug-ins with that first shot, there is so much potential. These were just from 10-15 mins playing around. #1 is just yours cleaned up a little.

By the way, here are two short (shaky) videos of the foxes:

Dunno why the sound is clicking.
