Among the Porsche cognoscenti, various generations of 911s, Boxsters, Caymans,
et. al. are described by their Porsche production codes; thus, the second-generation, water-cooled 911s are 997s, second-generation Boxsters are 987s and so forth. One of the minor pleasures I enjoy is infuriating my wife by using these codes (which appear to have no logical order) rather than production year when discussing the cars, a thing I do far more often than she would prefer. Consequently, when we were at an amateur race for a local charity on Saturday, I happily pointed out the racing number (an obvious reference to the production code) applied by the owner of the '06 911 Carrera caught in the pics below. After the race, I truly tempted fate by holding forth on BMWs using their production codes (
e.g., an '08 3-Series sedan is an E90), but the murderous look in her eye prompted me to shift the conversation radically to another subject.
