European Holiday
Posted By: Patang, 01-27-2008, 04:53 AM

I recently returned home to Australia from England where I was having a nice family christmas. Whilst over there I thought I may as well do some more travelling! So I did. In the next few posts I shall put up some of my favourite photos from the trip. All the photos have been edited in some form or another - mostly just to give it a little extra pop - so added contrast, changed the levels, the brightness, sometimes the sharpness, and little other things. I hope you like them.

Yllas, Finnish Lapland (9 images)

Whilst in Lapland I was lucky enough to achieve a life long goal to see the Northern Lights. We were very lucky as the weather for the week that we were there wasn't very good - low cloud cover and not much light - but on the second night the temperature dropped to -20c and the clouds vanished leaving a crystal clear sky and the shimmering waves of nature's disco...

Nice job capturing those "Revontulet", northern lights.
How did your gear hold up at -20 C ?

Cheers, Mike.

A nice series - I really like #1. It looks like some of those were captured through the car windsheld. I like the norhtern lights one as well - there can be spectacular when you get a chance to see them in person.

Thanks for the comments. The gear held up really well in that temperature. In fact, it was fantastic! It was doing better than I was! As for looking like they were taken through a windshield, it is not the case. The weather in Lapland was horrific and on the snowshoe trek it was almost worst. It was very bad visibility with low cloud and light snow which made shooting very hard which is why it looks quite hazy.

I know that it is not a critic or a comment on your pictures but do you have by chance images from the interior of the cathedral in Leon. I remember it as one of the most impressive that I have ever seen.

Fantastic pictures - thanks for sharing!

You have done a great job in presenting images with 'pop' as you put it.

The EXIF shows 43mm and 77mm focal lengths. Are these the Limiited series Pentax lenses?

Also, I see a lot of vignetting; was that added afterwards? It definitely works in most of the images.

Thanks for the comments! I don't have any of the interior of the cathedral sorry, but you are correct about it being very impressive!
And you are correct in thinking that those are the Limited lenses everyone loves so much! The vignetting was added afterwards to give that effect you see in those images. The actual lenses do not vignet that much (if at all!).
I'm glad you liked the photos.

Nice shots Patang, I really liked the accordian busker the vine choked stairwell and most of the Finnish shots. It's really cool (pun intended) that you got to not only see the northern lights but to photograph them as well.

NaCl(I'v only seen them once and that was waaaayyyy back when)H2O
