Welcome to downtown Minneapolis
Lens: DA* 50-135 f2.8 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Posted By: LeDave, 07-26-2012, 06:47 PM

Today I walked around in Minneapolis, I was able to take a few shots while it was still bright and sunny with blue sky. Then it quickly went gloomy and seemed like it was going to rain. I tried my best to make it bright and blue again but not the best post processing. Although it ended up only sprinkling tiny bits for several minutes so I didn't get to test the weather-sealing of my DA* 50-135 and K-5. Some of the later shots ended up being dark and gloomy but I am still satisfied with this outing.

No idea what Gold Medal Flour is.

Here's a glass built museum nearby a broken building.

Mississippi River?

My friend with his new K-30 and Tamron 28-75 f2.8, he's a Nikon user who just switched to Pentax after the K-30 Tour.

Saw a piece of brick wall in the river. I think it's the Mississippi River?

Some Graffiti down the bridge.

Here's from the Graffiti view, down under the bridge to downtown.

Here's what it looks like from atop the bridge to downtown.

North Star Blankets?

The way this guy walked across the bridge, the way he dressed and showed no emotion. I call him a true gangster.

Here's from a condo in downtown, I am guessing rent there is $1300 a month?

Nobody have comments about Minneapolis?

I also made one from above as my Facebook banner. Cropped it to hell though.

As for Gold Medal flour, it's flour you make bread with, biscuits with, pancakes (if you make your own), and lots of other things. I use it to make my homemade yeast bread.

I liked the tour around Minneapolis. TFS Dave.

I drove through it 13 years ago headed north, and rode through it on a bus 8 years ago. Driving through you have to watch traffic too much when you're the age I was when I drove through. Going south on a bus, you do not get to see much through tinted windows and bus moving fast.

I'm kind of neutral about Minneapolis, don't know the city and was only there once as a kid, but I enjoyed your pictures. I liked the gangster. :-)

Gold Medal Flour - everyman's flour. Can be found in any grocery store in the US. Thanks for the city tour. Interesting place.

Nice pictures, but not your Chamber of Commerce types.

My 2 cents - as a resident of neighboring St Paul.
Back in the late 1800's Minneapolis used to be the milling capital of the world - or something like that. The Gold Medal mill is from that time period. Probably about 20 years ago there was a pretty good sized fire there - which is why there are those ruins there in the first couple of shots. After the fire, the city decided that rather than tear down what was burned, they'd try to stabilize & preserve it. They then decided to build a museum dedicated to the milling industry - and that's the glass-fronted building you see in shot #2. I believe it's called the Mill City Museum - and it was built inside the ruins.

The structure in shots #8 & #9 is known as the Stone Arch Bridge. It was built by local railroad baron J.J. Hill back in the late 1800's, and I think it was still an active railroad bridge until shortly before I moved to Minnesota in the early '70's. I believe at least a few times a year they light up the full underside of the bridge - which makes for some pretty nice photo ops. (I've never taken advantage, however.)

And if you turned around from the flour mill to take those river shots, then yes - it's the Mississippi you were looking at.

Hahaha, I know how you feel. I felt the same way when I posted these pictures, I thought to myself "What? That's it and I'm going to write Welcome to Minneapolis?" Maybe I will try taking pictures deep within the middle of the city next time to capture all the great stuff happening around there.

Not trying to hijack your thread LeDave but here's a shot from a couple of years ago, with a little different perspective. I was standing inside the abandoned ruins of the flour mill looking up at the "Gold Medal Flour" sign through the windows.....
