Quack!!!
Posted By: Peter Zack, 01-27-2008, 05:23 PM

So there I was, treading through the snow with camera in tow. Looking for that great birding spot to get some shots. Beautiful day, -19C with a wind chill around -25C. I trudge through the brush and come to a clearing. Voila! there they are! Ducks in a little frozen pond with some open water.

Actually this spot was not far off the road and it was too damn cold to stay out for more than 30 minutes with the clothing I had on. Gotta get better shooting gloves. This pond had about 300 ducks in it (no kidding).

All with Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and AF 1.7TC

Not a great shot but this pond was full. Trying to get a few shots of them flying gives me a new appreciation of the great shots Tom posts.

Nice shots Peter, really like the one where they are sitting on the ice and the lighthouse silhouette. The lighthouse is a marvelous shot!

Great shots Peter, thanks for sharing.

I too have found a couple spots locally with open water and, as you say, there are plenty of ducks. Lazy buggers didn't fly south!

Great sunset shots; love the bridge and the lighthouse.

All of them are nice shots Peter but I really do like the Confederation Bridge photo.

#1 and the last two - wonderful images Peter! Beautiful colors!

I think you and Heinrich are tag-teaming me on images from the Maritimes...

That's too bad Tyler. You may have to send the body in with it from what I understand or you could just buy the new K20D. I read that it will allow for B/F focus adjustments and save up to 20 lenses in it's internal data base.

Thanks Heinrich. I have to do something when you post better shots of my area than I do!

Thanks Kim. I was wondering that myself. they were swining around and generally having fun and by the time I got back to the car, I could barely move my fingers. I can't imagine my bare legs in that water like their feet!

We're trying Marc. Thanks for the comments. You'll just have to come for a visit, I'm sure I can spare a parka and some snowshoes
#1 was a favourite as I liked the refections and colours on the water. I just wish that the birds were not so centered but there were a ton of shrubs all around and I wanted to try and avoid those.

Awesome shots Peter - man they sure are sharp - open water wow. The Confederation Bridge and lighthouse are very good as well. Glad to see you out and about today. The wind chill can be a killer - we have been fortunate here - but starting to pay now (tonight with wind-chill -35) .

I have often considered that lens ...umm perhaps if I get more into birding .... #1 is my favorite.

We're getting it as well. Tomorrow will be a mess. 25Cms then a day of rain. Yahoo. I am really pleased with this lens (better be as the bag is pretty thin right now). I had ordered it just before the sell off and it arrived after the issues had past.

I'm really pleased with it and the Af 1.7 TC combo. Doesn't loose much at all. Thanks for the comments. Without the TC, it focuses really fast most likely because it's bright with internal zoom and focus.

Thanks Heather. It was a perfect night albeit cold. No TC with those 2 shots.

Thanks Salty, I have traveled to the prairies a few times and although beautiful, I just can't see living away from the ocean. That salt air gets in your blood. We might complain about the weather at this time of year, but then there's always summer at the beach to look forward to.

Thanks for the comments.

Wow, really powerful images.

The sunset shot is well executed - simple yet effective.

The ducks looke so full of life.

Thanks for sharing these shots
