Getting used to the K-30
Camera: Pentax K-30 Photo Location: Virginia
Posted By: loco, 08-07-2012, 06:12 PM

I got my new K-30/18-135 kit from Amazon last Wednesday and have spent this past week learning and adjusting to the newer features and capabilities, as well as strangely placed buttons . My K-r has been a trusty little camera, but the K-30 is superior in every way. It's too early to do a real review of the K-30 yet, but I do have some photos I wanted to share. I don't suppose they are anything particularly special, but please excuse my excitement over my new toy!

As always, thank you for looking and I hope you like them.

First three were taken with the 18-135 WR. (Really like the bokeh of this lens)

Lori, these are all wonderful, what great captures you got and I can see why you are pleased. This is the first photos I have seen using the K-30 and Pentax has a real winner. Love the P/P on the hummingbird, a real pleasure to view and I hope Andy isn't eyeing the little guy. Keep them coming and TFP, Bob

Now that is a great series of shots, sharp, detailed with good lighting and colour.

I am a K-r owner as well. How does the shutter sound compare?

It is a little quieter, but similar. However, with a WR lens on, there is more of a difference in sound than with a non-WR lens. I initially thought, "wow, much quieter shutter!" because I was using the 18-135 WR primarily. When I switched to the DA L 55-300, it got louder.

Wow, these are stunning images! You have infused your shots with your excitement and skill!! Each is special... the gingko leaves are very textured and interesting, the still life wonderfully set, the cone flower lovely and unique -- the lighting amazing, Kitty is purrrrfect, and the little door into the tree made me smile. ... but that humming bird is absolutely gorgeous... your use and control of the post processing tools are excellent. Thank you for sharing!!

Thank you very much, Rondec!!

I wanted to comment on the K-30's AF and this seems as good a place as any to do it. I'm VERY impressed so far. The shot of Addy in the tree was as challenging a situation as I've encountered with the camera to this point. She was moving, she was in the shade, she is black, and the aperture was f/2. Probably 75% of the time I would've missed that shot with the K-r. I had one chance to get her with that expression and the K-30 and DA*55 nailed focus perfectly on her eyes! Maybe it was luck. I'll find out over the long run. But so far, I'm really pleased with the AF performance.
