An adjoining pair of ponds on Daufuskie Island, SC, has many nesting herons and egrets, plus a few alligators. The young gators were remarkably willing to pose. (There was also a large gator reputed to be aggressive; we stayed well clear!)

A light rain during my first visit to the ponds. I like how the water surface resembles alligator skin in this one, of a young American Alligator:

Look left. Two Tricolored Herons and a Snowy Egret, all juveniles:

Look right. The Tricoloreds, in their nest, have chased off the Snowy:

Next day, so not sure if this is the same gator or not. Note the dragonfly:

As I said, this one let me get close. This is an uncropped shot:

Great Egrets. The one below right is clearly a juvenile; not sure about the other one. Seemed to be a play fight, which they kept up for quite a while.

Thanks Charlie! At first I thought it was a pine needle. Then it flew off for a while, and came back and landed again.

Thanks SJM -- it's always fun to see them, if sometimes a little scary.

That, and make sure you're not the slowest person in the party! Thanks for stopping by, Bob.

Marvelous series! I wish I could have been there to see that alligator with the dragon fly, but you sure did a good job of bringing him into my house!! I would love a copy of the uncropped close version. It just sings. The Heron and Egret shots are lovely and I like that your shared their narrative. One more comment... the water is amazing, an element with many personalities and you have captured my favourite.

That gator shot with the dragonfly and the perfect reflections of both in the water are outstanding. I even made my husband get up and look (and he hates it when I do that) but he admitted it was worth it. The last one of the play fighting egrets is another of my favorites.
