One of our favorite spots for landscapes is transformed into a Pow wow site for a couple days of each year.

Nice shots. I approve of the modern "tipi" designs.

Actually, we were there at only the only dry time during the weekend, it rain on us on the way there, and on the way home, but not while we were there.

You've got a modern one of those there, too! I'm from the West coast, so am more familiar with the long house as well. The local tribe was the Semiahmoo.

this doesn't resemble the traditional southwest Pow Wow in any manner at all. You'll have to come to the US and attend one here and you will see what I mean. Nice pics though.

This is small community Pow Wow. So, it's not really a dance competition with prizes and the costumes aren't as elaborate. We only have to goto Wiki on Manitoulin Island to see a big Pow Wow with bleachers, hundreds of costumed dancers. Every tribe had it's own customs... many of our Pow Wow are what they always were, gatherings of nomadic groups where people could sing and dance and meet available mates and catch up on conversation. Go further north and you won't see any of the commercial Pow Wow innovations that became prevalent in the US. Pow wows can be still be visited if you seek them out that are still run in a traditional way without the influence of participants of the Pow Wow highway. Many of the dancers and venders on the Pow Wow circuit that travel the US and Canada attending the bigger Pow Wows do come to Wikiwemikong, on Manitoulin Island. Wikwemikong is unceded Indian land. At Wiki you'll see many of the same dancers you'll see at big Pow Wows every where.

That's my favourite too. When we came in she was at the booth where you pay the admission fee. She had the stamp to stamp our hands so we could go out and come back in. She really wound up and gave us a good whack with the stamp to make sure it worked properly. Then she got this huge grin on her face. So I was trying to get a picture of her, she was already note worthy. It just turned out to be the one I really like.
