Weekend snowshoeing...
Posted By: ve2vfd, 01-29-2008, 08:51 AM

I just came back from a weekend snowshoeing with some of my Scouts. We had to hike in a few miles to a log cabin deep in the woods.

We were literally surrounded by deer, they were everywhere.

Don't let that quaint scene fool you, the snow is literally 2 feet deep! Snowshoes are needed to walk

Fresh deer tracks everywhere

This is the nice cabin we were staying in, no water, no toilets, no electricity! Trust me an outhouse is rather cold when it's -38C at night.

The view from the log cabin's front door...

What a great series of shots. Beautiful area. The log cabin shot is very good and might use a little "shadow recovery" in PP to brighten the cabin walls a little.

The Doe is great, shame about the small branch across the face.
That's a great view and would be a nice place to spend a few days.

Thanks Peter, I'll try and work the log cabin a bit... I have to admit getting even lighting in bright snow conditions isn't easy.

As for the doe, I've been swearing at that tiny branch since I downloaded my photos I have to admit getting that close to a deer with 10 noisy kids around me was a miracle!

How's this? (Paint.net shadow recovery)

Attachment 7992

Shooting with all the kids around would be a real challenge. I bet you might be able to clone the branch out if you take some time. Might be worth a try.

Yup, looks nice!

I think I will clone the branch out, it's not a big job... but it's a bit of a pain!

A quick shot in Photoshop reducing shadows plus some spot tweaking gave me this:

Looks good!. Even if you can't, it's still a great shot and a keeper. Nice work. next time you'll have to go up without the kids and bring a bag of apples!

Those are spectacular shots thanks for sharing.

no water, no toilets, no electricity, no phones ringing, no e-mail alerts, no computer crashing = BLISS

Went for a walk in the woods in central Ontario last weekend. Saw two deer walking about 100-200 m away from me, of course I only had my 18-55 lens (the 50-200 was back at the chalet in the gear bag - I know I know my bad) and because of the crunching snow under my feet they wouldn't let me get more than 100 m away from them.

Aw well, I'll keep trying, it's just a challenge to get close so the branch you got doesn't bother me as much as the impressive fact that you did get so close in the first place.

Thanks!

I'm actually surprised I got any deer shots... from the tons of fresh tracks I knew the deer were there, but with ten noisy 11 and 12 year olds around me it's a miracle any deer came within eyesight of us.

Peter, I'm afraid if I brought apples in I'm probably get stampeded by the deer!!!

Looks like you had a good time Pat,

I believe you about the un-heated outhouse. They're bad enough at -20

The good thing around here is at that temperature you just know that there aren't any black widows in them, like I found last spring

Hey VE2VFD,

Great for you, being involved with Scouting! I see from your forum ID that you are also a Ham rado operator.
I liked the shot of the Doe, hope you don't mind but I had the lovely creature nibble the branch so you could get a better look.

Good luck with your troop.

Great shots Pat! Sounds like you and the boys had a fun time.

Out house at -38C! Now that brings back painful memories!

I like how you were able to bring out the colour of the wooden cabin in PP.

Thanks for sharing!

Stu ... Eppp black widows!? None of those here! To me the good thing is that it's so cold that there is no smell when it's that cold.

Spyglass ... nice photoshop on the deer!!!

Jeff ... Painfull indeed!!! Talk about freezing your a$$ off!
