Here are a few shots I took before and after surfing today. Small but nicely formed waves, and the water wasn't as cold as all the wet suits make it seem (though I was wearing my full suit and booties as well - gotta be warm). All taken with the Pentax SMC 300mm F/4.0 (no sign of that weird chromatic distortion from last week).

I like your 2nd shot but maybe a bit of cropping above and below might help the focus on the guy.

3rd shot is beautiful as you have the waves framing the shot for you. A feeling of expanse ocean is definitely there.

I was going to take some shots of surfing as well but never got around to it.

All very good but I really lie #4 just the way the guy in the back and the surfer are almost in sync. Well not sync but something about it I really like.

Thanks for the comments, guys! Roentarre, I'll try your suggestion on a tighter crop. Our waves are usually so lumpy and brown that I get enamoured with just looking at them.

I think the shots are really great. I also have to agree with James about the crop. but again you are so right about the waves in the gulf. I never really liked the gulf coast for the reason the waves are not high enough. The west coast has much better waves for us here in the states but The very best waves I found are in Australia. You just need to watch for sharks
