HDR or not?

I've been playing around with some HDR. This shot was done by taking the original #1 and using Corel AfterShot Pro to make 3 copies. 1 -1.0 EV, the original and 1 +1.0 EV then using Corel PaintShop Pro X4 to combine them into an HDR image #2. Just trying some stuff and looking for opinions.

In the combined image the treatment on the subject is good but the background becomes too prominent. I'd look for an approach that combines the best of both. For the most part the subject has a nice clean outline so it should be reasonably easy to apply separate treaments to subject and background. Very nice portrait, by the way.
