New Lens Outing
Lens: DA* 300mm Camera: K-5 Photo Location: South Carolina

Still leaning to use this lens but having fun with it just the same. Here are a few from the past week. Can't wait for the weather to clear up a bit. All these gray skies are driving me nuts.
In the second shot you can see the cloud of flies the Cattle Egret stirred up when he landed on the cow's back.

for a long lens, it sure does a nice job on closeups. I would hate to be a cow, no respect at all. Nicely done Susan, I think you're going to have fun with this at the beach and on your next West trip.

Thanks Bob and bluestringer. Heading to the beach the middle of next month then to the Keys for a bit if the hurricanes don't wash them out before we get there.

Congrats on the new lens, and on getting off to such a good start with it. Cloudy days are perfect for some subjects, such as the lizard and the butterfly pea. The other two shots are very fine also, although you could have used a polarizer on #4!

Thanks baro-nite. You are right about the polarizer on that fourth shot but am debating on whether or not to get one for this lens as I will use it mostly for birding. Hate spending the money for something that will be rarely used. I decided on a better tripod instead which isn't here yet so these were all handheld too. We had to look up the butterfly pea as we had never seen one before. Thanks for confirming our identification. Appreciate your having a look and taking the time to comment.

Very good shots with a hand held big lens, even the close-ups were good. Well done Susan.

Looks good to me, Susan. I didn't even know Pentax made such a lens!

Yeah, a high-quality 77mm polarizer is not cheap. Even for birding, though, handy when you're around water.

... about time you get this lens, Slowpez!

I have been using this glass for a good while now and it is "almost" permanently attached to my K5. Of course, I go after birds, most of the time, but I do take a few shots here and there which are not the typical "long lens" targets.
Just as you are showing here, this lens is quite capable of other than "bird stuff" ... in good hands, and you are showing some of the other/ better attributes which can be achieved with it.

Great shots for a first-timer with this new lens.

Cheers.
