On my back porch and I was closer than I wanted to be. The stringy stuff around her is the web and the gray background in the cement slab. Yes, she is still alive, I might want her to pose again. Yea sure! Thanks for looking......Cliff

This looks very similar to a Redback spider, is it? There is even a song about Redback spiders..."There was a Redback on the toilet seat when I was there last night..."

Ya but since he is in US i'd guess its our black widow variant.
I love spiders but even then I'd run away from this one.

Better the Black Widow than the Brown Recluse. Black Widows won't kill you but those Brown Recluse can really ruin your day and make you wish you were dead.

Thanks for looking guys. Her leg span is about 1 3/4 in, therefore a mature Black Widow spider. If I had my druthers, I would druther not bitten by either......Cliff

My roommate found one of these in the veggie bin in the fridge once. She must have come in the lettuce. We were not thrilled with finding her there but we didn't kill her. We just put an empty jar in the bin and sure enough she set up housekeeping in there. Once she was in there in her web my roommate just grabbed the jar while wearing kitchen gloves and put a lid with a few holes on it. She then took her jar and all outside and to the nature trail where she couldn't do any harm. On my own, toxic spider, I'd have likely just grabbed a can of RAID, lol, but my roommate was a gardener and she just hated to see them killed....
