I've had a real run of birds on the yard lately. Here's a shot I took this AM early, just as the sun was coming up! Beautiful bird! I think I know what species it is - anyone care to guess? It's not a common bird!

Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus)
This is a western bird. It's our largest sparrow.

The only other one would be the Eastern Towhee see my pic.

Hay! You're good! I think it's a Ruffus Sided Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus), but I'm still with the old Towhee debate. Very handsome bird. Sure enjoy seeing them in the yard. Wouldn't hurt for them to stop by when there's more light!. Yours is a fantastic picture, did yourself proud.

sort of funny Will, the first thing I noticed about your photo was the "green", that dry grass worries me for you folk up that way. I wonder if these birds migrate and just stopping in for a visit/

I think they are migrating! We seldom see them, so I suspect that's the deal. We offer the only water for miles so I'm sure that's the attraction, and it is hot at nearly 100F today? We are so damn dry it scares hell outta me! And no end in sight......

Same here. (upper midwest).
Went down to my trout stream today and found the water level so low the beaver have abandoned their lodge. No relief in sight.
