Going to the Sun Road
Posted By: daacon, 10-03-2012, 06:55 AM

Waterton is the Canadian portion of 'Glacier National Park' in Montana. One of the bucket list items we wanted to do when we were down there is travel the going to the sun road you can find some details Here . In fact there is a lake in Waterton Cameron Lake that boarders on BC, Alberta and Montana.

It's about a 90 minute drive from Waterton to the Park gates. The boarder crossing is only open from 09:00 am ==> 06:00 pm. The dirve to get there is pretty good as well. The bad news is once we arrived at the park gates were told that the road was only open up to Logan's Pass (about 18 miles in of a 53 mile drive). The attendant told us they are still doing construction and they are on year 7 of a 10 year project. The road was shut down (a portion of it) since early June this year. You could drive around and do the other side , but we only had so much time.

None the less it was worth the trip and we hope to get back there when the road is open all the way.

This is Duck Lake. I spotted this from the highway and had to pull over and get a snap in

Once on the 'road' inside the park this was one of the first views.

A little further down the road and another great view.

This is the view from Logan's Pass. We got out and walked around a bit as this was as far as we could go this time.

Very natural setting , steep cliffs , narrow roads , no 'guard rails'

On the way back to Waterton stopped and took a shot of this golden forest.

The park that started us on our national park odyssey. We have been back three times and never see enough of it. Thanks Dave for the trip up to Logan Pass. Bob is right about the side trip to Many Glacier Hotel. Spent some wonderful evenings there around the fire. It was closed for remodeling last year when we went through. Another great section is Two Medicine Lake.

Thanks Jerry - again this was using Topaz Adjust and the specify preset , process details separately and some tweaking. Single exposure.
I really like the finish you're getting on these. What preset did you use?

Thanks Susan we did see the sign to Many Glacier and were told about it , but it was a very short visit (we got a late start because someone told us the whole road was closed). Next time we may even plan to spend a night in St. Marry's so we can see more of the area. The boarder crossing where we crossed was closed at 06:00 pm and we wanted to back to Waterton for some sunset / Bear / Elk shots.

Thanks You would love it there - Fall / Spring I think offers the more chance of wildlife , however that area would be beautiful any time of year.
