ELK
Lens: Sigma 50-500 / DA* 60-250 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Waterton,Alberta
Posted By: daacon, 10-04-2012, 09:20 AM

Went went out one evening to a place called Alpine Stables as we had heard the Elk were coming out in the open near there. It was mating season as you could here the eerie sounds from in the bushes. We waited patiently. The first two I took with the Sigma 50-500 full out. The last two were with the DA* 60-250.

The fist two were quite a ways away and are heavy crops - still not bad for dusk and a relatively slow lens.

I slapped on the DA* 60-250 because we were going to another lake and this lens is much easier to hand hold for wildlife on the way. We were about to give up on the Elk coming out in the open and of course they did - more pretty heavy crops.

The Elk closest to us was interested in checking out a rivals harem. We thought we might see a challenge here , but I guess he figured he could not win or knew of some easier prey.

Really nice shots Dave. TFS.

I have a question though. I use flickr also and want to know how you get them to enlarge by clicking on them twice? Some of mine would look better if I could get this to work.

Love the elk shots!

I can now hear them bugle in the distance at home - just waiting for a couple to venture across the yard to the creek.

I can hear the elk bugling in the third shot. Nice captures of a magnificent animal. True sign of fall.

Thanks Dave well it was a 7 hour drive from my place - we do have them closer - but without the Mountains was a great trip.
