Prince of Wales Hotel
Lens: DA* 60-250 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Waterton,Alberta ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F5

This hotel was closed when we arrived. Spend many hours here though as it offers gorgeous view of the area. A little history : Built in 1927, this historical hotel sits high on a bluff overlooking the Waterton Village. One of 2 National Historic sites in the Park, the Prince of Wales was built to lure tourists north of the border via the Great Northern Railway. One of the largest all-wood buildings in Alberta, it has survived wind, fire and even the Depression of the 1930's to become a cultural landmark known by photograph alone throughout the world.

We actually climbed down the cliff here to get on the lake shore - that was a wee bit challenging for an old codger like me ha!

I dig both of these shots, buddy, particularly the second one. What a remarkable structure - I assume it's closed for the season????

Very nice, I had forgotten about that iconic old building (thinking instead of the lake louise and the banff springs hotels (maybe because I've stayed at both in the 70's but never managed to stay here)

Great images! I dimly remember having lunch at this hotel when I was about 12. Unless.... is there another old hotel in a setting like this in Waterton Lakes?

Thanks Jer - yeah it was closed. We had heard it had an award winning resturant and were looking forward to at least eating there but it was closed. Probably closed after the September long weekend as tourist traffic really slows down. (although all the other hotels were full as well - may be a staffing issue)

Thanks eddie - yes those are two other iconic hotels and I have many pictures of both.

haha yes we parked our car and stayed on the ground for quite a while taking snaps - Not sure what the price is , but the whole area is on the expensive side so it can't be much worse than where we stayed. Well worth it as it is really one of those areas that has been kept very natural and no commercialism (ie; no big chain resturants or shops everything was Mom and Pop stores / resturants). Like Banff was 50 years ago.

Thanks Jerry - this is most famous one for sure. There are many hotels in town - you may be thinking of another location.

I know exactly where that first shot was taken from. Would love to say my shot is better but it isn't. The hotel was open when we came through the area last year and we had a drink at sunset on the verandah. Didn't eat there though. Wish we had. Must be one of the all time great hotel settings.

The one I remember was in on open setting with a lake view, I think I also remember a pine or some other wood interior in the restaurant.
