my new weapon of choice ;)
Posted By: distorted_vision, 02-05-2008, 04:34 AM

hey guys,. well. i invested in a new laptop setup and i thought i would post up a pic.. its a tiny lil asus, but i have 2 gig ram, 8gig internal flash memory, a decent processor and its running linux. which is fantastic for me, as im a bit of a linux junkie.also, i have an external 120gig HD so thats more than enough for out on the road. also i invested in a spare batterie (4 cell).. so all up i have about 7.5 hours worth to work with, which is pretty awesome . apart from that, i bought a snazzy case and also a laptop cooling board with 2 big fans underneath to move the air around a bit more and to keep the temperature down.. so far it has worked awesome, so a solid investment!
i bought it for when im on the road taking pics, so i can dump the images onto it, view them and edit them and clear the card.. also, i can use my wireless net with it and send pic emails to friends and family when i am out and about also, pics to the newspaper ... i sparked a bit of a casual deal with a local newspaper.. street photography.. ill fill you guys in a bit more very soon

but yeh,, i pretty much love technology and yeh, i just wanted to show you guys my lil set up and i thought this pic was pretty kool.. oh yeh, ps- thats my bed! hah!

Nice work Kev.

I have been tempted to get a laptop ... but just on a lease though (business purposes).
Not sure if it is really worthwhile purchasing one outright for what i want.

But I'd like to be a little portable when it comes to photography ... and if/when i decide to try and get my own business off the ground.

Great setup Kev! I have a Smilodon gaming case with 10K RPM Raptor drives, etc. so I am familiar with mods and performance setups.

I like your thinking on how to make it work and thank you for sharing this! Excellent stuff!

Cheers,
Marc

That looks great Kev! I've been a Linux user for years, currently running Gentoo on a self-assembled desktop. I've been giving some thought to a Linux laptop. Did you have any trouble getting all the Linux drivers you needed to get everything working? Do the power management features work? I'd love to hear about the specific ASUS model, what modifications you made, and what, if anything is problematic under Linux.

Thanks for your post!

Kev,
I think I answered my own questions. A google search revealed that the Eee PC comes with Xandros Linux installed! I guess I haven't been keeping up with the Latest Linux happenings....anyway, looks great for your intended purpose, especially with the additions/upgrades you've made to it. Hope you enjoy it!

What a sweet computer! Both of them for that matter. Portability is a big thing for me. I don't even own a desktop anymore. I still have a HP 22" widescreen LCD I plug into when I need, but everything is done on my notebook now.

I am not in need a new computer at the moment, but the new Apple Macbook Air looks really cool. .7 inches at the thickest point and something like .3 inches at the thinest. Available with a 64 GB solid state HD. Wirelessly reads DVDs from other computers. Fits in an interoffice envelope. Crazy!
