the gathering storm
Lens: Pentax DA 12-24 Camera: k-5 Photo Location: outside Eugene Ore ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/45s Aperture: F16

When I took this the storm was just gathering...the clouds moving fast and billowy, the light still warm and colored. By the time I was back home the rain had begun to fall and the storm gained strength through the night. We saw a small reprieve from the rain the next morning but it was raining sheets and pooling up on the freeway for my drive home from work. I'm sure the leaves have all been beaten off this big leaf maple by now.

A moment can take on greater gravity when you sense its uniqueness. Of course, every moment is fleeting but I'm grateful that I was there to witness and capture this one.

Four image HDR processed in Photomatix.

Enjoy,

Marcus

Seriously good image Marcus. I love everything about it, most especially the colours and feeling of depth. The composition is wonderful too, the way that tree and great big sky meet.

Love the contrast between the earth colours and the brights. Though I donīt feel the storm approaching I still love this picture and what it convays.

Everyone, thanks for your kind comments. I agree that the photo does not say "storm brewing". The narrative was my attempt to convey something of my state of mind when I shot it and how it changed when the weather came in. My appreciation for the shot often is greater when the moment proves to be ephemeral. Though I fully realize that the viewer cannot see that. But as a shooter, it is a part of the experience that makes photography very focused on the present moment.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

I'm not a fan of HDR but it is a good tool to make some images work when is a single image would not. Glad it appeals.

Thanks, Marcus

Great picture, I love it. The colour in pictures like this is what attracts me and what I want to create myself. How did you get the sky to look like that? Was it just the HDR or some other PP method? Or did it really look like that?
