Day with the ducks
Posted By: dws1117, 02-07-2008, 09:30 PM

I spent a few hours at a small local lake taking pics of the resident ducks. It help me to relax on one of my rare days off. Today was a lot of fun. Ran into a young lady that was out there taking pictures for her high school photography class. She was using a Nikon, but she is young and she'll see the light one day. The only damper was dropping my lens hood in the water. Those things sink fast.

Here's a couple of my favorites.

The Muscovy Duck, Cairina moschata, is a large duck which is native to Mexico, Central and South America. A small wild population reaches into the US in the lower Rio Grande River basin in Texas. There also are feral breeding populations in North America in and around public parks in nearly every state of the USA and in the Canadian provinces. Although the Muscovy Duck is a tropical bird, it adapts to icy and snowy conditions down to -12°C (10°F) and below without ill effects.

Great shots.
I would call the Muscovy duck an "Ugly Duckling"! Contrasted with a Wood duck which I think is the most beautiful, I love Wood ducks

I'd have to agree. It is odd that the wood duck in the picture was the only wood duck there. Lots of mallards and a couple of Muscovy, but only th one wood.
