Why It Takes Me So Long to Sort Through Pictures
Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Iceland
Posted By: GeoJerry, 10-28-2012, 08:52 PM

I thought I had finished my final edit run when I posted that last set of Iceland landscapes. Now, I thought, just go through and delete the pictures that didn't work. The problem is, I see some of these duds and wonder, what would happen if....? So in the case of the recent duck pond picture I posted, it was a very dark image without much redeeming qualities, but I ran it through Topaz Adjust, clicking away on "I'm Feeling Lucky" and seeing if anything interesting pops up. So here are a few more examples of that approach. I know that these won't appeal to everyone, and many might prefer the originals. :-) But they're kinda fun to look at I think.

In this first one, the image was dull and slightly out of focus. Here's the original.

Here's what Topaz did with it.

In this second case this shot of a fountain failed badly. The surface of the fountain is too black to be interesting, and the leaf and berry below suffer from too much flash.

Topaz came up with this.

This last one was the most interesting to me. Here's the original. Pretty boring.

I ran it through Topaz several times, and then picked three of the results and ran them through Photomatix. Normally we think -EV, 0, +EV exposures as inputs into Photomatix to increase dynamic range, but in this case I input three random shots (why not?), and here's what emerged.

The fountain and clothes line certainly scrubbed up well. especially the clothes line. Very clever, well done.

Very nicely done, you took sort of boring images and made them interesting to view. Love the clothes line shot, way cool.

These are incredibly fun and interesting images Jerry. It scares me, (as I already don't have a life because of photography and pp) but I think I need to get Topaz and photomatix. I love the sheets... they should be a hard covered glossy photo book you create with all your special and unique images.

Thanks Charlie! Fun to play around with rejects and observe what happens.

Thanks Tess, and beware of buying these things. Topaz is quick (although just having it means lots of experimenting is now possible), but Photomatix can really be a time consumer. Don't say I didn't warn you! :-)

Yes you do! Especially Photomatix and to make it easy HDRSoft has a great free trial. Look forward to seeing your results.
Topaz Labs have lots to offer as well.
