Not a Spider
Lens: Pentax-M 50 f4 macro Camera: K200 Photo Location: Mitchell Co. Ga.

The Harvestman, sometimes referred to as a Daddy Longlegs is an arachnid, but not a spider. It has eight legs, but only two eyes.

From the wiki...

"The origin of the name daddy-long-legs is rather unclear. It may come from a 1912 novel of the same name, by Jean Webster - the book is about a girl in an orphanage whose benefactor is a tall man. Since he has long legs and she does not know his name, she calls him Daddy Long-Legs."

I think this is likely because it's the only thing I can even think of that vaguely explains it.

In the UK (so our English is correct, natch), we call these things "Daddy Longlegs":
