Flying towards me!
Lens: Sigma 500/F4.5 Camera: Pentax K5
Posted By: kengoh, 11-09-2012, 01:49 AM

Shooting flight shots of birds could be quite easy for big size birds (eg eagles) at a distance but for smaller bird is not, more difficult if the flight path is unpredictable, irregular and is not parallel with the photographer. (humming bird hoovering to the feeder is exceptional though)

Sharing a "planned" shot of a swallow flying towards me, for this case I shot with manual focusing.

Thanks for viewing.

Nice effect with the blurred wings and the sharp head.
Swallows are ridiculously fast. Color me impressed.

What's the maximum airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Regards,
--Anders.

Knowing how hard these are to photograph, for me at least, all credit to you.
Tremendous shot and excellent display of technique.

Manual focus?? Awesome! But I assume there must be a lot more that didn't work out so well. :-) Excellent shot, I especially like the background color which I think adds so much to this shot.

Yes MF, there's no way to AF this fast little bird in flight.
You are right I have to shoot many times to pick the best shot.
I have to anitcipate the bird landing point, AF that spot, move foward few steps and swtich to MF, when the bird approaching I burst shoot him.
