Monument Valley
Posted By: Bob Harris, 11-17-2012, 09:42 PM

from our travels, Monument Valley is located on Navajo Tribal lands, you can either take a guided tour of the area or use your own vehicle to travel the 17 mile dirt road traversing the park.

Nice.
It is my dear-to my-herat place. I spent 3-days at campground by the info-center in Febuary.
Yes, that is the same campground we stay at, that dirt there is really red isn't it, gets into everything.

This is a great composition and I like how the haze gives an impression of distance and depth.

When I was there there was a cold front on its way and the wind was blowing from the SW at +/- 50kts. It raised up all that red dirt and reduced the visibility. Still it was fun to see where those iconic westerns were filmed. The thing that irked me and one that John Ford didn't have to deal with was the roads and trailer homes that dot the landscape. Such is progress I guess.

The more I look at it the more it looks like a painted movie set.

Steve, what amazes us is this is all Navajo tribal lands and really nothing has changed there over hundreds of years. The trailers you speak of have no electric or running water. If you looked close on some of the roads, there are the many hogans of the same design they had a thousand years ago. We stayed in the area for a couple of weeks years back and the blue carpet in the motorhome was a light pink when we left. Any crevice in the rig or Jeep had red sand caked into it. This is a very unique area for sure and a must see for everyone.

The photo is very soft and taken hand held, it actually turned out better than I thought it would taken in the wind. The colors are what stood out for me, the clarity is quite poor along with other negatives. We may be back in the area next year and will take some more snaps of some other formations there.

Awesome image! I really like this one. It seems to have a painterly quality to it.

Lots of color in the area Jerry, you know how sandstone is. I think the photo is soft, which this time was a good thing. Thanks for taking a look.

Comparing the scenes of your shots with that of the John Wayne film stills, they have suffered quite a bit of erosion since that film was made.

Jason, I'll have to take a look at some, I can't believe that after only 70 years or so that there would be any change at all.
