My first trip to the Planting Fields Arboretum in LI NY (25 pix?; 56K be warned)
Posted By: m8o, 02-10-2008, 11:12 PM

A friend had told me about this place a while back, I'd forgotten about it, then a member here pointed me to their website when I'd mentioned it. I read the Orchids were in bloom until mid February (tho I think there will be orchid blooms longer and at other times). So I went.

Here's the place: Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park and Coe Hall Is Located 1395 Planting Fields Road Oyster Bay, NY 11771
And here's all the shots from this outing: 02/09/2008 @ the Planting Fields Arboretum album | m8o | Fotki.com

All are from the Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 ... I definitely wished for a wider lens at times. I put the FA 50mm f/1.4 on a bit, but definitely went back to the voigt after only a few shots; wasn't even a question when time came to shoot the orchids. Used my trusty Manfro Monopod with the pistol grip & foot stand to allow easy one-hand operation..

It was a drizzly grey day, so inside the green house it was only about EV10 or 11, 12 at best, so most shots are quite high in the ISO. Manual focus of course, mainly in 'M' mode, and some TAv. I did shoot a lot stopped down about f/6.3, 7.1 and 8, which is really rare for me.

My post processing was done mindful of what my eyes saw, being sure not to over sharpen or over saturating; but due to the low light I did boost more then I normally would. In a number of shots I turned the 'vivid' setting in Lightroom to -15 to give the more realistic rendering.

Sorry, I didn't write down what I was shooting... lesson learned. Don't ask me what something is, I have no idea. <oops!> But ask if you want, maybe someone else will..

(really tough to keep the petal detail visible in post of this white flower)

20: this was pretty badly over exposed, but I wanted to make something of it. really kewl looking plant it is... got carried away and I didn't look @ the camera's settings!

22: man did I work hard on these in post to keep the 'fuzz' detail and not have the color bleed into a blob... including all of them here.

Love 'em!! I had the pleasure of visiting Selby Gardens in Sarasota, FL a couple of years ago and my wife thought I was nuts - I must have taken 150 pics of the orchids!! Beautiful plants!! Thanks for sharing.

Nice work and a splendid opportunity to find some color on this Island at this time of year. I used to go there all the time when I lived in Queens. No matter when I went it was always free of people and you were pretty much free to have the ground...essentially... to yourself.

During early Spring, when the cherry trees are in bloom you can get really great shots of the mansion with fantastic color. During the summer the massive Copper and Weeping Beeches make for distinctive imaging.

Have you tried WestburyGardens?

Thanx Pooky & Chip & Stephen.

Stephen, nope, my first time visiting a place like that. I'll have to put that on my list too then. I'm 'relatively' new to LI, so still learning of all sorts of places pertaining to all sorts of things.

BTW, given the criteria you mention regarding attendance, the place must have been 'kicking' on that cold rainy Saturday then. I saw a few dozen other individuals while I was there.

Btw, great shots in your pbase gallery!

Great series, orchids are some of my favorite flowers. And this is the time for them for sure. But I'm most impressed with the "fuzzy" flowers, what interesting blooms.

NaCl(it is my understanding that they hold concerts there too)H2O
