Abstract Fire at 1/6400

Abandoning all hope of ever taking a decent macro, I turned to that age old question: what would fire look like at 1/6400 second? Here are a few of them taken in the back yard over a glass of wine. It's very tricky because the fire keeps moving in so many directions and it's hard to focus on anything. So I just pre-focused and hoped for the best. Most were uninteresting and deleted right away, but a few had some very interesting abstract shapes. The changes were extremely rapid so I suspect much higher shutter speeds would be needed to see exactly what's going on here.

Often you'd see these sprites developing, wisps of flame spinning off into the air.

Bonus pic of the day. I got Topaz Simplify over the weekend and gave it a whirl on this little birdhouse.

cool shots, I can see why the moth is attracted to the flame. I'll take another look after I have a glass of wine tonight.

Thanks Bob. Wine improves with age, but this series would probably improve with wine.

Nice! You did great! Single Malt......improves all things in appropriate measure of course!

Got me thinking! I shot some fire in boilers, with film years ago, looking at combustion...... that would be a neat idea to do it again from a pure photography standpoint!

Good shots. Fire photography is fun. Hot too. I took some at the roadside some years back when I first had the K20D. It is a hit and miss, but the results are great and capturing the frozen moment is something you don't see with the eye.

Very inspiring Jerry... Love all your fire shots... cooool! And the bird house is sweet. I only downloaded a 30 day trial for Topaz. I am not sure I'm going to keep it, but it is fun. Thanks for sharing and especially for the inspiration.
