Vegetation is so thick it's like a wall of wood. Well detailed shot.

nice shot here, reminds me of a couple of swamps that we have camped near. Lots of weird noises out there at night, quite scary actually

I really like this. Great color and especially, beautiful lighting conditions. Another one for the wall.

Impressive image.

It is confusing that it appears to be solid ground, btu then there are reflections (not a photo critisism, an observation on how strange this swamp is....... also worth bearing in mind I've never seen a swamp)

Thanks to all for stopping by and for the kind words!

This is actually something of an artificial swamp. It is property owned by a forestry school, and here they planted a stand of Bald Cypress back in the '30s (they're slow-growing trees). But as with a natural swamp the water level rises and falls, and trees have to be able to survive having their roots submerged. The little knobs sticking up are cypress "knees", part of their root system and what enables them to tolerate submersion. It contributes to the illusion that the surface here is solid ground, as does the carpet of recently-fallen cypress leaves floating on the water.

Cypress trees are a fantastic photographic subject, and I have plans to venture farther afield to natural swamps with older trees at various points next year. First I have to buy some proper boots or even waders.

This is a really brilliant shot. I think I've mentioned before that I think swamps are so difficult to photograph properly (I have never managed it). I invite you to Congaree National Park here in Columbia, Frances Beidler Swamp near I-95 and Charleston and Four Holes Swamp near Columbia. You will have a field day and I would love to see what you can do with these places. Congaree is not a swamp actually but a floodplain although it was known as Congaree Swamp for years before it became a national park. Open invitation so come on down.

Thanks Susan and Dave!

Susan, thanks for the scouting info and invitation -- a photo meetup would be great. I hadn't realized that the Congaree had become a National Park. Looks fantastic.

Stunning image! Terrific PP and everything about the tones and composition is lovely. I have been hiking through the wetlands around here lately, but my shots are not nearly as nice. It is a difficult place to shoot. Thanks for sharing!
