Honestly: how good is 30 year old glass?
Posted By: Marc Langille, 01-04-2007, 05:31 PM

I am not sure how good, but I think this shot, taken in April of 2006 (second week I had my DS), shows what good quality old glass can do...

I was walking past this beautiful Clematis on a vine/lattice, stopped and popped off a single shot. Taken with the Pentax-M 50/1.4 lens (no aperture ring).

Another of my "drive-by shootings"...

Cheers,
Marc

A touch dark but looks like a nice sharp lens.

A tad dark for me too, but I'm on a calibrated monitor and everything appears dark. Marc, are you sure that's not a silk flower?

But... where is the picture?

EDIT: Ah, now i see. Seems as i looked at the post the same moment it was edited and the picture changed.

Well, 30 year old lenses are as good as new ones, generally speaking. I think you have compressed/sharpened the jpg too much. There are halos I guess we shouldn't blame the lens for. Nice picture!

regards,

However, I didn't realize I could add another corrected image in a subsequent reply!!!

DOH...

However, let me know what you think of the edited version that's now in my original post. I apologize for not catching that and adding a corrected one later on...

Much brighter. It almost looks like a silk flower, as Ericc said.

That pair of flowers look bright and vivid to me.

I am bidding on multiple M lenses as well. Fun to own and play with them

I like it I think that older glass is often superior to some of our choices today.

I use a older than 35+ year old Pentax-M 50/1.2 lens from an old Pentax MV (I think that it was the kit lens, but I'm not sure)
It's all that I even brought on my last hike https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/2053-i-risked-winter-storm-today.html

Before I got the DS, the last time I shot 35mm (Minolta XD-11) was over 25 years ago. I feel like a kid again with an M or K lens on my DS...
