Rhyolite, a ghost town
Posted By: Bob Harris, 12-05-2012, 08:45 PM

Just out of Beatty, Nevada, Rhyolite is a ghost town with much character. With a population of over 10,000 at one time, Rhyolite was no small town. The town was founded in 1904 and by 1907 even had electricity. The bank building was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. Ruins of its wall still stand today. The financial panic of 1907 took its toll on the town and businesses started to shut down. Then, the mines started to play out and by 1916 the power and light company had shut down and the people had moved on.

I especially like the mercantile building. The BW really adds the dimension of "time gone by" to the photo. Thanks for sharing.

You know how much I love all your western shots Bob, but this series is the tops for me!

Composition, lighting, and image treatment are all perfect. I especially like the subtle color variation in the 4th one.

Thanks, I'm surprised it is still standing, when you walk up on the steps it really creeks and moans.

thanks so much Stan, glad you enjoyed the series. I did all of these using Picasa and was happy with the results. There is also the big hotel/train station and much more in the area to view and it is a wonder to me that someone hasn't graffiti or torn the place up. Maybe more people respect things than I thought

If you look at the black and white, I think you can see snow . OH wait, Bob took this picture, there isn't going to be any snow within 1000 miles. Must be a processing artifact.
I saw snow once Norm, it was in a picture I think.

thanks for the kind comment, we get off the main highways a lot of the time. Lots of hidden treasures here in the US and I enjoy sharing the ride.

funny thing Mike, is my wife saw the wagon and suggested the photo. I have to listen to her more often I guess.

great series Bob, good photos - I like the B&W, and nice little history of the town
cheers
glad you liked the thread CC, lots of these towns out in the west, when the gold/silver or whatever ran out, the towns simply died.
