Experimenting with flash

I find flash one of the hardest things to understand. My birds were willing subjects today I would like sugestions on how to improve the lighting or what did I do wrong. Some of them just don't look right. Maybe I'd need a second flash ?

Other than #4 looking like a little too much flash power, none of these looks "wrong" to me. Indeed, they look very good. I guess you're using a large diffuser (or bounce) at a pretty high angle? You might try a somewhat lower angle.

I was bouncing of the white ceiling at about 1/2 power on the af360 flash. So I pointed the flash at the celing because a lower angle would've meant bouncing of the glass window maybe lower power and a second flash as fill in from below ?

Can you arrange the birds so that you can bounce off a wall?

These pictures look pretty danged good to me. I don't really see a problem with any of them. Nice work! From one who also has trouble with flash photography.
