Couple of Birds
Lens: Sigma 50-500mm Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Greenville, SC

It was an interesting day here as I saw a couple of birds that are not commonly seen around here. This morning I was watching at the feeder and saw activity in the trees out back. There were many birds flying in and out of the tree. I had the Bigma on the K5 so I pulled it out. First bird I saw was a bluebird but he flew off before I could catch a shot. Then I saw the cedar waxwings. I've seen more here this year than ever but it has been several months since they were last around.

Then, a few hours later, we were on our way home when a car was stopped and we saw several vultures in the road. They moved aside and we went on home. I grabbed the camera and returned to get a few shots. We have a number of turkey vultures here regularly but I haven't seen any of these black vultures around. I know they are common to the area but I Just haven't seen them up close before around our neighborhood, just the turkey vultures. Anyway, these guys flew up into the trees once I walked up closer.

Nice catches! I sorta like the bird photos that just happen naturally. You did well! Those Buzzards are great - damn they are ugly, but necessary!. Your vultures are missing that pinkish skin on the neck and head?

We're supposed to have Cedar Wax wings around here but the Mocking Birds chase them off. Haven't seen one this year!

Just took a peek at my National Audubon Field Guide an found your Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus). Interesting!

Yeah, the vultures I see more often are the turkey vultures with the red heads and neck. We have had a number of waxwings earlier in the year. Had dozens of them sitting in the trees a couple of mornings and they stripped the Holly bushes of their berries. They even got to the point that i was able to get shots from very close, even using flash.
