Who likes Salty Popcorn?
Posted By: spyglass, 02-17-2008, 01:58 AM

This is a picture of a popped kernal with a residue of salt.

A kernal that split open but failed to pop

The next three shots are all pictures of salt on an unpopped kernal.

Thanks for looking,

Looks like you took those pictures with a grain(s) of salt...

I like the last 3 the best, what lens did you use?

Its interesting to see grains of salt at that size. I didnt realise that they are pretty much all cube shaped, I thought they would be more spherical because of them bumping into each other. I guess sand is the same. Nice shots but could be a bit sharper (at that level maybe its not possible).

Thanks, these shots sort of crystallized my thoughts. Seriously, I'm an organic/polymer chemist - I've always enjoyed looking at shapes of crystalline materials.

Thanks for looking, I used 200mm of extension with a 50mm lens. (approx 4x life size) The objects at this extreme end up being 1/2" or less from the end of your lens. This exceeds what most lenses were every designed for. Illumination can be tricky. You either shadow the object or shine light into your lens - ha ha. Depth of field is less than 1/8. You have to pick one entity on the subject. I could have gone for one sharp salt crystal, but wanted to try for a greater range to let people see how many crystals that might be consuming when shovelling in a favorite movie time treat.
