Black and White Landscape
Lens: DA 18-55mm WR Camera: K5 Photo Location: Wesach Falls, Terrace British Columbia ISO: 80 Shutter Speed: 3s Aperture: F16

I took this shot while out for a photo session with a friend of mine earlier this week. I had trouble maintaining a natural looking white balance throughout the scene so I chose to finish this as a black and white image with some serious contrast.

This is Wesach Falls, located just a short drive north of Terrace British Columbia, Canada. During the afternoon the falls are shaded from the sun which worked well to achieve a longer shutter speed of 3 seconds which was desirable for this shot. I also sharpened the final image a bit to bring some detail out of the ice formations on the right hand side of the image.

I have taken many waterfall images, most are finished in colour but this one seemed to work well as a black and white.

Amazing what one can capture with a kit lens if your preparation is right. I like the foreground clarity and detail. I would agree this looks lovely in B&W with a lot of mid-tone and dark variations for contrast. Perhaps a shutter speed of 1 or 1.5 seconds would have brought out more of the waterfall texture. But I suppose you were after this effect for the waterfall. Well done.

Thanks for taking a look Voyager13. I think you're right about not really needing the full three seconds for this one since the water was falling almost completely vertically pretty quickly.

Agree with voyager13 on trying a faster shutter (you can even go a bit faster, 1/2 s or so, and still have a pleasing sense of motion). Also agree that this is lovely!
