Sydney NYE fireworks
Lens: Pentax 60-250mm Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Sydney

The time of the year again to shoot the fireworks...Went for the Sydney NYE fireworks and went up to Dudley Page reserve where you have to pay $30 for entrance but the good thing is that there's a good view and most importantly less people and less trouble makers(still a lot of people though!) Got there 6:30pm and still got a good spot upfront.

The spot is pretty far from the center of action but the view is good. On the 9am fireworks, had some problem with the wind and camera shake even with a tripod at 8 sec exposures...Lucky there was no wind at midnight but the problem is the smoke that stick around the second half which ruined the best part of the show...Well, I'll try again next year closer to the spot so smoke becomes less of a problem.

Anyways, the photos!

Since there's a lot of smoke, I find the abstract fireworks more pleasing

Anyone in Sydney that wants to join next year?

A very good series of shots, colourful and sharp. I thought you must have been some distance away to get those bursts fully within frame.

Thanks! Yes it was a lookout far from the action and those shots are shot with the 60-250. Good thing is it's more peaceful and you can see the whole Sydney harbor view, bad thing is the smoke of course..but no one would have been able to foresee that the smoke would block out most of the bridge anyway.

some of the best fireworks that we saw were out of Sydney and you captured these very well. I wanted a longer view for my shots like you took, so more of the crowds and other landscape was included. Like you said the smoke is the main and being closer helps to eliminate the interference.

Thank you everyone! And Bob, yes being further does have its advantage of being able to see everything, but you need a very sturdy tripod to support a huge telephoto photo lens if there is wind. Even though mine is sturdy, but not bulky enough to withstand the wind with a bazooka sticking out lol.
