For the last four or five years, the sweet gum tree in our front yard (planted right after we built the house in '95) has retained its grip on autumn well into the winter season. Frankly, I've seen it more vibrant in earlier winters; nevertheless, I took some pics yesterday and this morning to celebrate the tenacity of our tree.

Nice colors, Jer. We had 2 sweet gum trees (1 on each side of the house) when I was a kid. Ahhhh...the sweet memories of running through the sweet gum tree leaves barefooted and stepping on the spiked balls. Ouch! Ouch!

Thanks, Tom. Yeah, those little balls would be hard on bare feet; rather academic around here, since walking in scratchy Saint Augustine grass crawling with fire ants discourage barefoot romps for reasons quite apart from the sweet gum's little land mines . I do like the sound those little balls make when they get hammered by my hot-rod lawn mower.

Thanks, Bob. Today, it's going to hit 74F, but next week were going to have some real winter (for around here) with a couple of days hitting only the mid 40s - about 20 deg below average for this time of year.

Those are some brilliant looking leaves.... OMG charlie you're one of those hot rod lawn mower guys. Over sized tires? Custom air intake and carb ? Fire wings painted on the side? We need pictures.

Beautiful images Jer! That would be the most photographed tree if it was in my front yard. Wonderful job on the leaves... so much texture and warmth, and the depth of field is really nice. Thank you for sharing

Tess, thanks - once again - for the exceptionally kind words.
