Rio Lagartos is located in the north of Yucatan, the safest region in Mexico. Mayans are peaceful, and I haven't heard any drug-related story in Yucatan.
We flew to Cancun, which practically is American territory. American resorts, heavily populated by American tourists; American cityscape. From Cancun we took a day trip to
Ek Balam and Rio Lagartos. (They have tours in many directions; this one being one of the most interesting. Very few tourists buy it, since it doesn't have the fame of places like Chichen Itza.) Rio Lagartos is about 3h30 from Cancun by car. Pretty long way, but it's definitely worth it.
