Longhorn Caverns
Photo Location: Burnet, Texas
Posted By: Bob Harris, 01-20-2013, 11:09 PM

from our travels:
Longhorn Caverns was created over thousands of years by the dissolving and cutting action of water on the limestone bedrock of the area. Fossil remains show that many Ice Age animals once occupied the cave. Viewing the caverns seems like you are viewing abstract art in 3D, quite surreal.
The earliest records indicate that the Comanche Indians were the first to use the cavern. They came in about 400 years or so before anyone else did. In more recent history, the cavern was used as a Confederate stronghold where gunpowder was manufactured in secret during the Civil War. The cavern is also rumored to have been the hideout of Sam Bass, a legendary Texas outlaw.

Very nice cavern shots. I haven't taken the good camera into caves yet but look forward to that. Your shots have inspired me to do so, thanks.

Crazy patterns and such rich colours. I was looking at the last trying to figure out the shape in the bottom right. It's a human, with a camera. Very good series

They had nice lighting here Trev and we also used a flashlight for the photos also. These were taken with the Pentax Optio p/s cameras that preformed well I thought.

Tess I think it has to do with the lighting they installed there and the limestone had a polished look and feel to it. Thank you.

Some look like there could be some truth to the rumors about hell being underground... Fascinating place Bob!

Interesting stuff Bob. Looks like you had your point 'n' shoot. I'd like to go into a cave like this and shoot some macros of the cave formations.
