After days of waiting-Female Pine Grosbeak
Lens: Sigma 70-300 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Whitney, Ontario, Canada ISO: 400 Aperture: F5.6

I have lots of pictures of the male, they seem to come around every day.

But the female has been very elusive. Even when they come they tend to get spooked before I can set up a camera, or even creep up behind it if it's already set up.

Today is very cold , and more than 10 Pine Grosbeaks, males and females were on the porch rail for 15 minutes or so and I finally got some nice sots of the females.

What wonderful shots of the grosbeaks. They look so big in comparison to the redpoll in the last photo.

In the summer, if I'm lucky I see evening grosbeaks at my feeders. I've also found the male seems more likely to make an appearance and I rarely see a female.

They are both finches, but the Redpolls are tiny compared to the the Grosbeaks, maybe 1/5 th the size. None the less, the little Redpoll in the picture was doing it's best to move the much larger bird off the spot where it was feeding. It didn't succeed but it tried very hard.

Every day when we sit down at the "email computer" (the one too slow to process images on) for coffee, we check to see who's out there. It's gotten to be a habit. You can go days without seeing a new birds, but that just makes it more exciting when a new one turns up.

Great shots, Norm. You have a nice adult male and a young male in these shots. Note how the upper tail coverts are starting to turn reddish pink on the young bird. By next summer this young bird will look like the older male. The adult female is more of an olive-green where the young male is golden-russet. One of the best ways to tell young males and adult females apart is the throat - the female almost always has a bright white throat whereas young males are dingy grey.

No, you just get known as a kook and your coffee is more interesting in the morning.

Love 'em, regardless of the sex. Meanwhile, I can't help wondering "Where do the females go?"
