Random Cold-weather Shots
Posted By: tessfully, 01-23-2013, 01:50 PM

It was minus 38 Celsius when I got up today. Mist was rising off the river like smoke from a forest fire. This is the third day in a row and it makes walking the dogs and photo opportunities brief. Here are a few I managed over the last couple days.

Pine in early morning mist... I was using the Pentax 60 - 250 and trying out some settings I read in a book, shutter speed 1/500, f/16, which gave me an ISO of 1600

Three minutes later I took this, 1/200 f/8 ISO 200 --- what a difference!

And then I saw this shot which I quite like...It was a very soft light and quite misty, but I wonder if this should be more contrasty?

I took the above pictures from the balcony and my head kept hitting the icicles...a few abstracts....

A very cool thing... while on our dog walk there is a crow that flies over almost every day and caws at us. I only had the Tamron 90 on my camera but he got pretty close and I snapped this...

Took three visits to get one of these I liked

I was standing outside waiting for Norman and I randomly shot the birds coming into the feeder. I took this with my Pentax F 70 - 210

thank you for having a look

Great shots, Tess. Saves me having to go out on this -10 degree F morning!

I like the misty rendition of the pine in #1 a bit more than #2, since I think it evokes the frigid air better, but both are lovely, like the rest of your pictures. Amazing the chickadee can grip metal in those temps, eh? Oh, and the crow. I wonder if this one and a mate have a nest nearby and are telling you to beware. The snow on top of the spruce tip is really nice. The colors and subtle bokeh of the background nicely complement the sharp branch, and I really like how you got the snow details. Often snow is just a white blob, but not in your pix.

I watched a Nature of Things episode about crows a while back and apparently, they are a very intelligent species and quite good at facial (human/animal) recognition. I wonder if your crow recognizes you and the dog. Excellent series of photos. The difference between the first two is quite dramatic.

Regards

thanks bluenose! I think I saw the same program as you. I really admire crows and ravens and I am honoured by this one's daily greeting.

I too can't believe the difference the camera settings made to the picture. If not for the exif data I would think I made a mistake. It certainly puts to rest the argument that there is one visual truth that can be documented by the camera.

Beautifully done Tess. I can see that first ice shot on a wall somewhere, really encourage you to get it printed on metallic or a gloss film.
The second ice one has me wondering if its a sculpture of Norms leg ?
-38 ??? 10 days ago we were +38 and higher....and today (still 31C) we are tucked away inside as the remnants of a tropical cyclone passes over dumping 250 - 600 mm of rain on the region, a few hours North of us , Bundaberg, has had over a metre of rain. Further south in Victoria bushfires still burn.
Lots of flooding, road closures and stupid people being rescued from flooded creeks.

No real issues here, just wet.

Enjoy your work Tess, thanks for sharing.
