Juvenile Cooper's Hawk
Lens: 100-300mm DA Camera: K5 Photo Location: Terrace, BC ISO: 800
Posted By: shadowsonoureyes, 02-01-2013, 09:32 AM

Hi There,

Thought I'd post a new image that I took while out at work yesterday. I was doing some groundwater research in a field adjacent to a rail line and had been noticing a large flock of redpolls flitting around through the tall grasses and shrubs. I observed them feeding from a pile of seeds that had apparently spilled from a rail car at some point during the winter. As I had my back turned to the birds, I suddenly heard a lot of anxious chirping and and little wingbeats. As I turned around, this Cooper's Hawk was busy chasing the little redpolls through the vegetation. Eventually the hawk took up perch on an aspen once it determined the redpolls were a tough target.

You can see frustration in his eyes
Nice photo, well framed! Almost looks like a studio photo shoot.

Thanks for the view Mr.Newt. I think the "photo shoot' feel comes from the flash. The lighting was poor and I was unprepared so I was forced to use the onboard flash for this one. It did succeed at bringing out some of the detail in the bird however.

good capture, the flash worked well to bring out the detail with the bird against the sky, I shall have to keep that in mind

Yah I think it worked out better than expected. One of my sharper images with the DA 55-300mm.
