Immature Red-Tail Hawk
Posted By: palmor, 02-23-2008, 06:18 PM

I followed this guy for a little while today and managed to get a couple of OK shots.

The 1st he was in a telephone pole, I had to crop a bit to cut out all the wires and get something decent.

Pentax K10D ,Tokina 400mm f/5.6 AT-X
1/1000s f/8.0 at 400.0mm iso400

In this second one the lighting was really tough. It was an overcast with very flat but extremely bright lighting (fresh 10" of snow was reflecting all that bright light). I had to use a +1.5 Exposure Compensation even with spot metering to avoid under exposure. This is another pretty heavy crop, I'm hoping it doesn't look over processed..

Here is a link to the unedited original to show how much I had to crop

And a near 100% crop just for fun

Nice shots.
He looks a little thin though
Go see my desktop and maybe mine will share.

Also consider mine was done with a 105mm lens, seems he was just a little pre-occupied

I like these as well. Your for fun 100% crop you should have done away with all the empty space on top. Very nice overall. I wish I could see more of these guys around.

Hey all, thanks for the replies.

Something I just noticed that is bugging me. I viewed the 2nd Hawk image on a non calibarated monitor and I notice PF in the tree branches, which I don't see on my calibrated one. I guess I'll have to uncalibrate my monitor to fix the PF so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb to all those un-calibrated monitors out there..

They look pretty good to me John I don't see much PF on my laptop (maybe that's why some of mine are not very good)
