I like the composition of your shot. I would have loved to see you use a reflector to direct some light onto the left side of the animal (not to fully illuminate it, but enough to bring out the detail of the hair) The eye reflection has huge potential in a shot like this. What was the rectangular item in the eye reflection.

Yes, I agree. I mainly posted it for the composition, too. The image as it is now has slight clipping both in the dark and the highlights. The DR of a DS just cannot do better. This was a shot with bright sunlight from behind

Of course, I could tone map to bring out the dark a little. But what you see already is a 50% crop and I was afraid of noise. Also, the horse didn't have clean hair

As for the reflector... You are totally right of course, but then the horse didn't exactly behave as a model, either (it actually appeared to be interested in my Pentax ). And as I just carried the DS with DA70 in P&S mode, it was kind of a snapshot from last sunday's splendid weather (20 centigrades at 600m altitude, north of Alps in February...). And I didn't want to turn a fill flash against the nice horse

Very good question, indeed. Looks like a black blanket or a shadow on the floor. No blanket, though. Could still be a shadow, maybe of a sign post. Or horses have a rectangular iris
